Doing the right thing

I had been attending church since childhood. I was not always the “good girl,” but much of my adult life was spent committed to doing the right thing: standing beside the man at the pulpit, composed and carefully presented, praised for the discipline of making myself smaller and calling it grace.

We were together for five and a half years. There were important conversations we never managed to have — about what we were experiencing, and what we were not. When we married, I left my corporate career to work in the nonprofit sector. The work was meaningful, but it never fully felt like my own.

The turn · Atlanta, 2021

It was there that I finally recognized a truth I could no longer ignore: I had been trying to build a life from someone else’s blueprint. On paper, it looked like the life I was supposed to want. In reality, it no longer reflected who I was or what I wanted for my future.

The decision to divorce was difficult, but it would be a continuation of my liberation journey after leaving corporate in 2016. I wasn’t going back to corporate. I had left for a reason, and despite the uncertainty, I valued the freedom to shape work around purpose rather than prestige.

The pandemic had left me burnt out, and the move to Atlanta marked the beginning of a different chapter. By then, I had already spent nearly a decade immersed in community work. I had organized as a community activist, launched transitional housing for formerly incarcerated people, started up a food truck, and worked on a farm. I took a restaurant job — not as a step backward, but as the next step toward building a life that was finally my own.

My own spotlight

My values haven’t changed. The way I live them has.

This work has been my liberation — choosing authenticity over performance, curiosity over conformity. I stopped living for approval and started embracing the parts of myself that were once considered too much: ambitious, sensual, unconventional, unapologetically free.

The story of Kitty Chow continues to unfold. Growth isn’t a destination; it’s a lifelong practice of becoming. Each chapter has brought me closer to living with greater honesty, purpose, and freedom than the one before.

I didn’t lose my faith. I redirected the devotion.
